Vertigo Coffee is located in the picturesque, historic town of San Juan Bautista. A town that time forgotten, where feral roosters roam the streets, and you still have to pick up your mail at the Post Office. With a population of 1600, everyone you meet is a familiar face and in a lot of ways life still moves at 1900’s pace. Established in the year 1797 as one of the original California missions, this small town is steeped in history and tradition that seems out of place in modern times. Here at Vertigo we draw inspiration from that. In a way, we are also a throw back in time. In an age of computerized programmable roasting machines that reduces a roasters role to that of a quality control manager, we specialize in an old world craft of small batch, slow drum roasting. Using a vintage German made cast iron roaster and such time tested tools as touch, sight and smell, we practice the art of roasting in the old, venerable traditions of Northern Italy. Custom roasting to order, we bring different origin beans to its optimum roast level. All the coffees are hand crafted just a few pounds at a time, slowly, with love and magic. We provide the love, and in thanks, the beans offer their magic. The old adage is very true: you reap what you sow. Sure, it’s time consuming, it can get tedious at times, and there are easier ways to roast coffee, but we do what we do because we love it. There is derived sense of awe, wonder, and personal gratification in taking tasteless green seeds and turning them into something special: one of the world‘s most exotic foods. We do it so that you, our customer, can experience the freshest, the best, and most painstakingly uncompromised coffee we can craft. We do it out of respect for coffee farmers and their hard work by roasting their coffees to the peak of the bean’s potential. We do it for the sheer romance of it, and because there is nothing else we’d rather be doing.
